9/14-9/15 – Lounging in Kuta, Bali

After 2 very active days in Ubud, I decided to take a few days to relax in Kuta.  You may have heard of Kuta beach; besides being one of the popular tourist spots in Bali with a long beachfront, surfing, 5-star resorts, and top-notch restaurants, it was the target of terrorist bombing in 2002 and 2005.  The effects of those events are seen even today, with many police visible throughout the area and bomb inspections on all cars going into major facilities such as hotels.

I walked along the beach and saw a bunch of people surfing.  I took a break and plopped down in the sand, and soon a guy approached me to see if I was interested in surfing.  After I politely declined, he proceeded to sit next to me on the sand to have a conversation.  Where are you from, how do you like Bali.  Just a friendly local wanting to get to know someone new.  It was a cool experience.

I indulged in Italian food my first night there; the restaurant was actually owned by an Italian.  I didn’t know until I ordered Cannoli for desert and asked for a fork and he came out from the kitchen, telling me that Cannoli is to be eaten by hand, not with a fork, and refused to give it to me.  Good thing too, he was right, it tasted better eating by hand.

Lessons Learned

  • When traveling for a long period of time, sometimes it is nice to just “chill” for awhile, take it easy, and relax
  • Eat Cannoli with your hands!  :)
